Re: What's broadband to you?

That said, I am curious what broadband means or implies elsewhere on
the planet in regards to the Internet.

Here in Phoenix there are several DSL offerings, cable, and some wireless, dish antenna-based services. The dish services used to use a 56k modem for uploads and the dish for downloads (don't know the speed), but I understand that they are now using the dish bi-directionally.

Most of the DSL users I've spoken to are getting between 500Kb/s and 1.5Mb/s downloads, although one reported more than 3Mb/s (he's very close to the station). I think they typically pay around US$40 per month.

I use the cable service, which costs $34/month. I routinely see 3+Mb/s downloads and sometimes get up to 1Mb/s uploads. I have been using it for about 3 years and have never had much trouble with performance or intrusions. I do have a firewall.

These services are widely available throughout the metro area, although a few of my friends have had to wait several months for installation depending upon the service they selected and what area of town they are in.
