Editing interchange formats

(Apologies for the cross post but I'm interested what people on both
lists have to say.)

It strikes me that QuickTime reference movies like EDLs (Edit decision lists)
are a way of describing edits, transitions and effects while leaving source
media in tact.

Many editors can export to QT reference movies, but I was rather suprised to
see that for the most part editors treat reference movies no differently than
flattened media. That is, the structure of the movie is not visible, and it is
not possible to reedit it, for example by altering transitions, or effects or
changing in-out points.

The only exception I was able to find is QT Player Pro. Are there others?

Am I missing something about the suitability of reference movies to be
re-editable? The format may be a little low level since it doesn't specify
timing relationships between clips for example but I would have thought that
the potential support for it as a rediting format would make up for any
deficiency.

If not QT, what (if any) is the best candidate for an interchange format for a
reditable movie.

Perhaps one of the EDLs? Will it be SMIL 2.0? Or are we doomed to spend years
with incompatible proprietrary formats?

Cheers,

Andrew
