Re: best storage?

My approach:

I keep high quality master tapes (D-Beta, DigiBeta) avoiding reliance on DV tape (even if the material was acquired on DV) which I have found to be less robust. if you are shooting on DV, you may want to consider sending your tapes to a dub house for more archival masters.

I keep 'transcode masters' (pre-processed files... more info below) and 'output' on two copies of CD or DVD-R media stored separately. I store settings files and any relevant project files on these disks.

By transcode masters I mean; Essentially uncompressed intermediate files that are much smaller than captured video because they have been gamma corrected, black restored, noise reduced, deinterlaced, frame-rate reduced, cropped and scaled to the largest size I plan to deliver.

If I need to go back later and re-encode for a new codec, these files are easier to deal with than re-capturing. The only hitch is if a new codec or delivery circumstance requires me to have a larger size or higher frame rate than my previous 'best'. In these cases I need to go back to the source.

The best part of the 'transcode master' approach is that all (most) of the 'preparation' for final encoding is done only once so output to multiple bit rates/formats is MUCH faster than if I had four settings (two bit rates each of Real and QuickTime for example) where each setting opened a hi-res source, cropped, scaled, gamma shifted etc.

For very low bit rate versions of the files there is often a further reduction in frame size/rate but this happens faster starting with the smaller more 'read from disk and decode' friendly transcode master file.
