Re: quicktime-talk digest, Vol 3 #985 - 4 msgs

There are a number of issues when playing WMT on a Mac. Mostly, you need to be careful on which codec combinations you chose. For example, a popular speech codec (ACELP.NET) will NOT play in OSX. Also, do not use custom control buttons as the javascript will not function.

Aside from codec issues and custom buttons, we routinely create streaming content for our clients that will play in a Mac with slide shows. In particular, WM9 in OSx plays very well (provided the OSX computer has installed the WM9 player first).

Obviously, WMT playing in a Mac is not the preferred content for Mac owners. But, putting aside religion, WMT is now a viable solution provided you are comfortable having your Mac based clients be forced to download a player (no different than the PC clients downloading a QT player). And, in both cases, Linux users are still left out in the cold.

BTW, don't look at our site demos for Mac compliancy as they are all encoded with ACELP.NET. Only our private content is being encoded with WM9 (the Mac solution I recommend for OSX WMT content). Unfortunately, WM9 is not a good PC solution for corporate managed desktops because those clients are prohibited from any downloads. Quite a conundrum, the new WMT9 is great for individuals and Macs but not for managed corporare desktops in the same way these users are blocked from downloading QT. We have to deliver the oldest possible codecs to our corporate clients. Ah, the life of business webcasting is so fun.

any known issues about windows not playing streaming media either embedded or in player?
