Well...
...one step forward, two steps back.

With 6.5 player & plug-in, in Win XP, chapter tracks work in both the stand alone and browser-embedded Quicktime. Didn't before. Many thanks.

With 6.5 player & plug-in, in Win 98, those same chapter tracks are NOT visible (they were before) in either the player or embedded Quicktime. Disabling and re-enabling the track didn't help. (I haven't tried re-creating them yet.)
Strangely enough, in Win 98 & 6.5, chapter tracks generated through SMIL code: e.g.
<img src="2.jpg" region="slides" dur="10.5" qt:chapter="slide 2" />
are still visible & work.
(Sigh).
