Hey Ben, thanks for the help - turns out it was my poor use of Premiere,
encoding my avi files with the Microsoft MPEG 4 Video something V1 - changed
it to the Cinepak codec and it was right as rain.
Thanks for the suggestions though, much appreciated.

Ah! Some flavor of MPEG-4, then. QuickTime normally handles MPEG-4
fine. Could be Advanced Simple, or something else of an unsupported
profile, then. Try using VLC.
