OK, I see that I have to download the component separately. Apple, are you serious? Two downloads and a restart?? Updating existing software didn't pull down the 3gpp either.
Yeah, this'll take off.

It's an authoring component, isn't it - I believe 3gpp content will playback fine for any QT 6.3 user, but if you want to author you download a free component. Hardly a big issue for content authoring folks, and regular users won't ever need the component. I could be wrong... actually looks like I may be :)

I wouldn't mind the component download kicking in for playback... haven't tested that yet. But now that we finally get a decent speech codec again, it's not included by default (if it requires the download) which is a big bummer.

Also, I don't get why the restart is necessary for this component - seems like an overzealous QA process. AFAIK, at most you should need a logout - I don't appreciate having to restart for something like this.

Please correct me on any misrepresentations - I'm going off first impressions, I haven't done much testing with it yet and have already installed the component on all of my boxes so I can't be certain whether playback-only components are included in 6.3 or not.

Unbundled components like the MPEG-2 playback make sense when they are there for legacy support and not for forward-moving technologies. But unbundled components for contemporary technologies will really stifle rollout on a larger scale.

Then again, without testing I'm blowing hot air. Can anyone answer:

1) Does QT 6.3 ship with 3gpp playback without downloading the additional component?
2) If not, will the necessary codecs auto-download if necessary?
3) Is AMR generally accessible to any Quicktime app?

I just installed the component. Without the component the Movie to 3PGG option is not available on export.
I made a small movie, changed the name from .3pg to .mov and embedded it here.

I got a message that the necessary software was not available on the server. So it seems correct that you need to install the authoring software and the plugin playback component.

On another computer (without the component installed) I tried to playback both the .3pg and the .mov files and got an error message " . . . there is an error in the program".
