Streaming/encoding is no problem on almost any platform nowadays. Viewing
is another story.

Before Windows Media 9 Microsoft supported the MMS protocol (in several
flavors) to stream .asf/.wmv/.wma files. In WM9 they introduced RTSP, but
it won't interact with anything except a WM9 server. Smells like RTSP,
walks like RTSP, sounds like RTSP but it's not RTSP. For some reason it
doesn't surprise me too much.

Apple is using RTSP to transport .mov/.mp4 files. An .sdp is a
media description and in general you don't need to generate it separately.
Quicktime 6 can receive streams from any standard RTSP server.

You can install the EnvivioTV plugin for Windows Media and it will receive
standard MPEG-4 RTSP streams just as QT does. In fact you can install the
EnvivioTV plugin for QuickTime, too, and it will add MPEG-4 Advanced
Simple Video Profile besides the Simple Profile QT alone supports.
