G'day all,

I see a number of digital video cameras can create MPEG4 as a file format. Which MPEG4 is it?

Good question... There are a bunch of cameras that produce a MS-MPEG-4 V3 elementary stream encapsulated in an AVI file. This could not be claimed to be an "MPEG-4" file but M4IF and patent holders had never been so strong (or interested) in contrasting false statements. At least until now.
All the other cameras, produce an MPEG-4 Simple Profile video that's exactly the profile used inside QuickTime. What varies a lot from camera to camera is the "trasport" format; someone uses AVI (that is not part of the MPEG-4 standard), someone produces the elementary stream alone, very few cameras produce an MP4 file.
