Re: speech to sound found

Right after posting to the list, I found SpeechToSound, an app that purports to do exactly what I was wanting. See: http://www.riccisoft.com/software.html

However, it is "unsupported" and MacOS 9 only so my quest continues. Is there a MacOS X app that does this and, if so, where do I find it?

See my follow-up post :)

I also had an idea to do it via a Web service call as there was once an AT&T demo server (or was it IBM) that used standard HTML forms and would generate WAV output for you with their voice model... I don't know how kindly they'd look on someone hitting it a few thousand times though, and ye olde PlainTalk works just fine for my needs (and I love the Speak n' Spell tude).
