Video Compression Roundup
Moore9s Law promises vast amounts of bandwidth and storage at low cost. But
no matter how plentiful and cheap, we always seem to have more material to
move or store.
The answer is compression. Disk-based video servers have used compression
from the beginning. Now tape, disc, and flash memory devices derive the same
benefits from compressed media, and Internet distribution couldn9t exist
without it. Even digital broadcast uses compression to deliver a quality
picture to the home over a small slice of the spectrum.
But what is the state of the compression art today? What9s available, what9s
coming, and what are the pros and cons of each scheme?
Ben Waggoner will take us through the sometimes murky world of compression,
and present a high-level overview of what the technology has to offer today
and tomorrow. While avoiding explanations such as the mathematics behind
Discrete Cosine Transforms, Ben will explain the strengths and weaknesses of
several compression techniques, and will discuss the future of the industry
as he sees it.
Ben compressed his first file in 1989, and has been working full-time in
compression since 1994 and a compressionist, consultant, and encoder. He9s
the author of 3Compression for Great Digital Video2 from CMP Books.
No-host dinner: Leaky Roof Tavern, 1538 SW Jefferson; Portland, OR, starting
at 5:00 PM.
