In iTunes, select iTunes menus and select Preferences item. In the Preferences dialog, click on Importing and change the "Import Using" to "AIFF".

Then Drag the .mp1/.mp2/.mp3 file into the Library window and wait for it to convert to AIFF.

After that drag the resulting AIFF file out to another folder and it's converted.

Sadly... no luck... the file is remaining a .m1a or .mp2... dragged in or out... it shows now conversion...
But now, as the AIFF has been chosen as the import format, it does offer to convert it to AIFF, and... still the same old error... -2003.
(Quicktime could start this good habit of printing to the console!)

And I'm even more lost as I have seen in more manuals:
- mencoder basically mainly focusses on producing AVI files and for this in Quicktime, I would need some extra codecs. The rest seems buggy
- mpgtx (available with fink) could do something with my files, including demuxing them... but it doesn't go out of the world of mpeg encoded files and doesn't convert to MP3 or something such
- sox doesn't understand any of the mpeg format
- I'm left with ffmpeg maybe... tomorrow... (and madplay and mpegdec it seems)
