Why don't you capture directly to Final Cut Pro? I capture to Final Cut Express on the Mac with no problems.

Methinks you're fighting to fix something that doesn't need to be fixed... just capture at 720x480 as the app wants to (correctly), then render/export to 640x480 (or some other 4x3 format).

I'm aware of the differences between the pixel formats but the whole point of the exercise is to reduce the amount of rendering of video on my (acknowledged) underpowered equipment.

Again referring back to my original message:

"... I happen to use that system to do simultaneous captures from an analog video source and I don't think the system can handle capturing both video streams with the processor it has and besides, the analog is natively 640 x 480..."

The analog video stream is coming in from the output on what is in reality a digital still camera's A/V port and the max resolution is 640 x 480 which coincidentally is the final output format size. So one way or another, one of the captures has to be converted and as things are cleaner down sampling than up sampling I try to work in 640 x 480. FC Pro has no problem with editing and working with this with a custom preset.

So I thought that if FC Pro *let* me set a capture profile that has a given resolution, that it would do the necessary transformation on the fly or why would it let me set it to that?

As a programmer, I try to avoid misleading my users in to thinking that if they make a settings choice that isn't going to result in the expected results to either:

a) not let them make the choice

or

b) at the very least pop up a warning that doing that isn't going to produce the desired results.

These are very basic UI principles as put forth in Bruce Tognazzini's "Tog on Design" book. Unfortunately, a lot of Apple software (both application and OS) has drifted further and further away from those principles, but that's a discussion for another day and another list...
