Re: DV Capture Canon ZR100

Craig,

Are you capturing over an analog video digitizer, or via FireWire/DV? I guess I misunderstood and understood you were capturing ...

... ll have to rethink your post.

Few questions -

What's the exact device path you're going through? Camera is connected to what?

Ok, typical setup is like this:

Canon PowerShot G2 -> ATI All-in-Wonder component video -> Pinnacle Studio

Canon ZR100 FW -> PowerMac AGP 450 -> Final Cut Pro (or now Hack TV)

So, on the PC side, I'm limited to the 640 x 480 because when I've tried it at 720 x 480 the quality of the image from the G2 is degraded. So when I bring the two clips into FC Pro, one or the other has to be rendered if they aren't both in the selected editing preset and that then entails a *long* dead time on my primary machine...

On another note, I agree with your final statement though - a rant about UI is best left to another time.

... isolated as possible). If you need help with that, once it's identified I'd even be willing to write it up for you.

Best,

Roger

I am definitely going to write a couple of bug reports because at the very least, the fact that the QT Player records it with a bogus frame rate of 29 (actually 29.03) when everything else sees at 29.97, indicates a problem somewhere in the code. And, as I said earlier, I think iMovie should ignore the lack of a tape being loaded as long as it is receiving a valid DV stream from the device.

The behavior of FC Pro's capture preset is more questionable and should probably more clearly documented.

Quoting from the documentation:

"Even if you'll eventually be outputting at a smaller frame size for multimedia use, it's best
to capture and edit your video at its full size, then scale it down later."

This implies that while it might not be a good idea to set the capture to something other than the native size that it will capture it for you at the specified size which at least in my case it doesn't.

Believe me, being the software industry for nearly 30 years I know that software and documentation can't be perfect. But that said, there are things can and should be done to not "surprise" the user...

I do appreciate all the help being offered and hope that I've now explained what I'm trying to do and why my experience has been so frustrating...

- Craig
