Hi list,
I've recently started playing with SMIL as a way of providing streaming video
in dynamic playlists, small video clips, that sort of thing. Everything is
working nicely, but I'm curious about one thing.
Unless I'm doing something I shouldn't be, do SMIL files always get downloaded
to the Desktop on OSX before they're played in QT? At first I thought it was
a browser issue, so I tested with both Firefox and Safari and made sure to
change the default download directories from the Desktop to something else
entirely, but the SMIL files were still downloaded to the Desktop.
Is there any way to disable this "feature"? I don't think that our users would
be particularly pleased after using our site for an hour and realizing their
Desktops were suddenly filled with 50 SMIL files.
I will admit to being somewhat of a noob when it comes to QT and OSX, as my
previous experience was using Windows Media Services and ASX files instead of
SMIL, so it's entirely possible that I'm doing something insanely wrong. I
can take solace in the fact that a co-worker, who has been using Macs since
forever, cannot figure this one out himself.
So, if anybody can let us know what we're doing wrong, or can at least explain
to us why this is happening in the first place, we'd be appreciative. I don't
understand why this behaviour would be desirable in the first place, let
alone how to prevent it....
J
