What is the quality of the playback ...now?

On another discussion list - complaints about playback (of HD h.264) on Windows QT7 brought this comment:
"The Nvidia 6xxx on up chipsets have MPEG2 and MP4 hardware decoders built in. This is why they play fine on those machines."

How big a factor is this when it comes to getting quality h.264 playback on Window or Mac boxes?

Been playing around with an unedited clip and H.264. This last one has no sound (for now) - it's "fist size" - 362x272, 300 kbits/ sec, 15 fps.
Plays well on a G4/500. Can't wait to see the higher quality level of H.264 from QT. Wonder how it plays on slower PCs? Thanks in advance.
