Re: How Does H.264 Play On Window's PCs - New

Hello,

I tryed out only the previous version but that prooved to be very, very slow
encoding and cpu intensive while decoding. QT7 couldn't playback the Ateme
H264 (to me the best around) branded as NeroDigital nor it was able to
playback the opensource x264 exported in .mp4 containers by mencoder. The
same goes for the Mainconcept codec and the one by Cyberlink PowerEncoder,
which I suppose developed by Elecard.

Interestingly the DirectX filters of Vanguard and x264 can decode QuickTime
H264 using MediaPlayer or whatever. VLC 0.82 can also playback QT encoded
(as well as the one of Squeeze 4.0) contents but with artifact along the
borders (green macroblocks).

I couldn't try Vanguard or the dismessed Dicas AVC becouse I hadn't time to
figureout how to use mBox which possibly is the only muxer that can import
H264 in avi while the GUI I Knew didn't accept H264 imput streaming yet.

What is the quality of the playback ...now?

On another discussion list - complaints about playback (of HD h.264)
on Windows QT7 brought this comment:
"The Nvidia 6xxx on up chipsets have MPEG2 and MP4 hardware decoders
built in. This is why they play fine on those machines."

How big a factor is this when it comes to getting quality h.264
playback on Window or Mac boxes?
