I might be wrong, but isn't part of the problem that these files are not
discrete channels, but rather interleaved, and thus I'm not sure it is even
possible to just cut out one side in software. Peak Pro 5 doesn't allow it.
It does have a Stereo to mono DSP function, but it is re-writing the data.

It will recompress, but give it a whirl and see how it sounds.
I bought one of the Griffin recorders -- not the one with volume control,
and it seems to be optimized for recordings somewhat at a distance, that is,
not up close (seemed to distort). If you have the one with the volume
control that may be another matter. I recorded some stuff and had the iPod
plugged into the firewire port of my computer (for power), shut the lid, and
I think I caused the recording to stop for some reason.
