Hi,
AFAIK FFmpeg uses x264 libraries to encode/decode h264 and, yes, x264
DirectX filter (the one compiled by Celtic Druid at least) can decode QT
H264 very well. http://developers.videolan.org/x264.html
This isn'true for VLC 0.82 which embeds the same code but shows green blocks
along borders frame that seem not refreshing.
I did not run any test on MPlayer and there are other projects too.
