What does automatic streaming speed really do?

Folks,

So, what does the Automatic Streaming Speed option in QT7 really do?

Does it test-stream some packets from the server right before it starts downloading, and assign the highest available band lower than the measured connection speed? Or does it measure bandwidth from an apple.com server?

    I want to know how the value is calibrated.
