In your case, yes, it saved your day. There are two fields in the video picture, one made from the odd lines and one from the even lines. If the 486 was scaled into 480, most of the field lines would push into the wrong set, or you would get field lines that were a blend of an odd and even line. That in it self wouldn't be the end of the world, if it wasn't for the fact that the lines are 1/60th of a second apart in time. If there is horizontal movement in the scene you would get bad artifacts.

Given that it is best to crop, you might think it would crop three of the top and three off the bottom, but that would reverse the fields, and that's not a good thing.

There is an exception to this, and that's when you know for sure that the original video is frames and not fields. Then it might be ok to scale the image, but seeing as you're going to lose perhaps 40 lines of the image on a regular TV, why worry about losing six during the compression stage?

Incidentally, is your caps lock key giving you problems? It seems to come on and off intermittently during your e-mails.
