Did you compare quality? I would personally rather have it take longer and look better. In the past quicktime MPEG4 encoding did not look as sharp or clean (less artifacts) than even other free mpeg4 encoders such as Divx. I think apple spent a LOT of time and energy making an amazing H.264 encoder. I have tested the quality to others and the others don't come close.
I do have to say it does take a LONG TIME to dualpass encode clips, but the results are stunning and nothing else has come close to this.
