Any 802.11g base station will work with Airport Extreme. What you loose
by not using Apple's base station, is wireless AppleTalk. If you don't
need AppleTalk, then that isn't a problem. Keep in mind, you can still do
AppleShare over IP just fine with any SoHo class wireless base station.
So if all you use AppleTalk for is file sharing between Macs that support
AppleShare over IP (anything from OS 9 and later, actually I think it is
OS 8.6 and later if you want to double check), then you are still good to
go. The time you would have an issue is if you need true AppleTalk for
printer access, or file sharing with older Macs. If you just need it for
printers, check to see if the printer supports TCP/IP printing.
As far as which WAP to buy if you don't buy Apple's... that is really up
to you. I've been happy with LinkSys and DLink in the SoHo market. My
brother swears by Belkin. And of course, I've been VERY happy with Cisco,
but if they are in your price range, you might as well just get the Apple
Airport Basestation.
If you do need the AppleTalk support, then you may want to look at the
Airport Express. It is a full WAP, it just lacks the router features of
the more expensive Airport Base Station. It is also more expensive then a
plain WAP from any of the SoHo vendors, but it is likely to be the
cheapest one on the market if you need AppleTalk support.
