Apple spent millions on pushing H.264 and it appears that nobody is
even looking at them as a contender in the encoding market.
Nobody? I think that's an overstatement; first you have to define the
target market for their encoder - is it intended to be the be-all-end-
all to H.264 encoding, or from past efforts is it more likely they've
adopted an open standard in order to benefit from a market for more
sophisticated encoders while providing a solid, if not middle of the
road, encoder for their $30/pop customers? I'd put my money on the
latter - Apple has in the past, through their DVD products for
instance, sought to kickstart the market while leaving the game open
for more advanced tools they can't possibly provide the focus to
provide.
I wonder if this is because of their previous mpeg4 encoder results
or if it's just because quicktime 7 isn't available on windows yet.
That sounds like a likely bet. How many major H.264 codec shootouts
have occured in the time QT7 has been available, btw?
Does apple even care to be a preferred H.264 encoder?
See above.
