Re: wmv movie format

Thank you guys for the good info. I ended up downloading Stuffit, unzipped the Windows Media.sitx file to get to the Windows Media Installer, installed Windows Media. Net net: it works, however, every time I click on a wmv file, iTunes gets started (it's the default app for this type of file).
How do I change that, i.e., how do I make Windows Media the default app for wmv files?
I'm new to the Mac (coming from Windows), and I was wondering if the Mac had the equivalent of Windows' ability to let you define default apps for specific file types.
Thanks again for your help.

Marc,

Disclaimer: I don't work for Flip4Mac or Microsoft!

You can play Windows Media files on your Mac using QuickTime, if you have
the right codec. One such codec that you might want to try is the WMV
Player product from Flip4Mac. See <http://www.flip4mac.com/>

I have used the product and it works quite well.

As for the .sitx file extension. The extension is associated with the
latest generation of compression products from Aladdin (now Allume). You
can download and install a free expander for .sitx file from
<http://www.stuffit.com/mac/index.html>

Once you get the expander installed, you should easily be able to install
Microsfot's Windows Media Player.

No, WMV is the dreaded Windows Media format.

I tried to download the Microsoft player (since wmv seems to be a
Microsoft format), but what I downloaded is a package that has
a .sitx suffix (Windows Media.sitx), and no applications
(apparently) in the mac can install that application.

sitx is a compressed file in StuffIt format. When you unpack that file, you should get a program called "Windows Media Installer" There's really no such thing as "install" on the Mac, but WMP has an installer to handle putting the plug-ins for your browser, and that sort of thing.

By coincidence, I just downloaded Windows Media Player 9 for OS X
about an hour ago, and I got a file called WindowsMediaInstaller.bin
as the result of the download. (a different compression format) Kind
of strange that you got a different file.

When I double click on Windows Media.sitx (the package I
downloaded), it asks me what application I want to used to install it.

You need one of the uncompression programs (like StuffIt) to open the file.

First, is there a way to play .wmv files on the Mac.

Yes, with Windows Media Player - the road you started down . . .

Second, if not, is there a third-party package that can
process .wmv files and that can be installed on the Mac as a normal
app.

For all practical purposes, no.
