Re: List Of H.264/AVC Encoders/Decoders

Frank

First of all - despite my lack of knowledge on H.264 - the one thing that is obvious is that the advances expected from MPEG-4, Part 10/AVC/H.264 are not "quite" here yet - are only in a process of evolving right now. So until all of the "bugs" are worked out - it's good to know what works or doesn't work in comparison with and/or with QT7. As the weeks go by - there likely will be a lot more comparisons posted (Ben's, others - and mine - do you really want to look at buses?^)  ).

In addition to level of quality for various purposes - like you mention - there's the whole question of - interoperability - which any standard depends on. By checking out the following site - one sees a little about the interoperability issues - as well as the fierce competition out there for our "heart and minds" - again we are looking at a 3 to 7 trillion dollar a year industry here on the internet alone - and then there's cable, dvds etc.

If the x264 and Videosoft H.264 Pro video samples are supposed to be AVC/H.264 - they certainly don't play in QT7

The focus here seems to be on encode which is fine but I would have expected to hear more about the decode side of things.  Specifically, do all decoders perform equally well or not.  If not, what are the differences.

It's also important to view playback data from within the context of the full spectrum of playback and interactivity parameters most relevant to your work.  If you  are a content developer who deals with the widest possible array of media as many of us in higher education must do, QuickTime is dominant despite weaknesses here and there (e.g. scale-able streaming).

On the other hand, if your interest is in a few areas or one specific area (e.g "DVD Backup" as here), aspects of that one area become much more important in your playback decision making.

So, looking at this data one ought to ask, "Is DVD backup relevant to what I want to do?"
