And when the next compression format comes along to replace H264,
inflating those files by a factor of three, all the bandwidth,
processing power and disc space issues will be a thing of the past ;-)

It's not something most people will worry about. They'll do the
save, put up with the long time to encode, and then will play it on
their iPods. The fact that going from the original source would
give better results won't occur to them, and the file size being
bigger doesn't matter, because the iPod is a lot faster than
broadband.
