What is the best video deck to Firewire converter? In particular
ones that have component-in. Special prizes go to ones that have
better color space, and the winner would be one that has SDI-in!
Matching outputs (Firewire to component or SDI) would be a bonus.
I would say the main contender for Mac users is the Aja Io, as long
as you don't need HD. It has all of this, and there are setups for
Final Cut. Its main drawbacks (which may not concern you) are the
strange lack of any input-selection buttons on the unit (the unit
must be tethered to a computer just to switch inputs), and the lack
of Windows drivers. If you go with the Io, make sure you download
and install the recently-released "control panel" app for it; it's
the only way to adjust the proc amps (not sure what people were doing
without this facility, but now you don't have to worry about it).
What looked like an Io-killer has turned out to be, well, something
far short of that from Convergent Design (http://convergent-
design.com/CD_Products_SDConnect.htm). This product looks like an Io
but addresses the lack-of-controls issue, however it unfortunately
offers only DV25 I/O via FireWire. So to use this one for anything
decent, you'd still need an SDI capture card.
I find that a good quality / data-volume compromise is capturing
through the Io to DV50.
Regards,
Gavin
