Re: best converter?

Colin,

SDI (Serial Digital Interface) imput is for injecting already digitized video streams.
SDI and now HDSDI are pro alternatives to firewire, not to mention the growing number of camcorders outputting by the HghSpeed USB.

It's better to use an SDI card rather than converting the flow to firewire and generally the conversion is from DV (firewire) to SDI or from compressed HDV to uncompressed HDSDI or visually lossless compressed as in the case of Cineform ProspectHD (10bit 4:2:2) and ConnectHD (8bit); anyway Cineform solution is a Wndows only for Premiere/AfterEffects. The gain when switching to 4:2:2 is justified only for color grading, compositing or keying ...

Component is analog and separates the two chroma channels. Component imput is usefull also to bypass the eventually strong compression step as for the Sony Z1U HDV camcorder which has something like a component (Once I was told RGB) output.

So, as far as I know all the bridges that end into a firewire convert whatever they inject to a DV stream or HDV and those with a Component input are by fare the most expensive; for example:

What is the best video deck to Firewire converter? In particular ones that have component-in. Special prizes go to ones that have better color space, and the winner would be one that has SDI-in!

Matching outputs (Firewire to component or SDI) would be a bonus.
