Hi Fabio,
Thanks for the link to the new survey. I had seen it a while ago, but
lost it.
As you mentioned, the original message referred to "PCs", but your
newer survey also refers to "PCs" on the vertical scale.
I know this used to mean Windows, but not sure how "PC" is now defined.
If PC stands for Personal Computer, this would include Macs, and even
desktop Linux.
If the Macromedia survey refers only to Windows PCs, the results can't
be right. Wiindows Media Player is installed with Windows by default,
except for the recent EU WM-free version, which I am not sure if many
people are buying. And WM can't be un-installed. So, how could Flash
Player have a higher penetration, as it is not always found on new
computers, and not everyone would bother to install it?
It would be interesting to have some more recent data, which would
include the big spike in iTunes/iPod/podcasting phenomenon, this
includes QuickTime architecture.
Just curious, is there a lot of podcasting taking place in Italy?
What is the most popular podcast aggregator client on PCs there?
Is iTunes popular on PCs in Italy, based on your observations?
I still think mp3 is the safest way to go if you want the most number
of listeners to hear it, even on Windows PCs, once you get into the
variety of WMA codecs, some abandoned, and figure in older and newer
versions of WM players, upgrade issues, etc. But this is just a gut
reaction based on my experiences here, I don't have any stats to prove
it. And mp3 is an open standard, not a closed proprietary one, so you
are not locked into one vendor.

These result should be corrected as follows, in my humble opinion:
*) I feel this survey is strongly US-biased, whereas my sentence was
dependent on my Italian Market.
*) NPD performs survey on a volunteering (i.e. human) base, I would
prefer automatic (e.g. HTTP) detection
*) the above mentioned survey does not split results by platform (Win,
Lin, Mac). The original question of this thread referred to Win.
