I tried a few test compressions from DV source material, using QT
Pro, for iPod playback.
The default export Movie-to-iPod worked, of course, and the quality
was quite nice.
File extension was default .m4v.
Then I tried exporting to file format: MP4, Video Format H.264, data
rate 400 kbps, optimized for download, 320x240, 29.97 fps, key frame
automatic, restrict profile to baseline only, encoding mode single-pass.
Audio: aac-lc, 128 kbps, stereo, 44.1 Hz, encoding quality better.
File extension was default mp4.
I duplicated the movie, and named the duplicate with an m4v extension.
I made another movie, same as above, but with profile restricted to
baseline and main, Gave one copy the .m4v extension, the other mp4.
I made another movie, same as above, but with profile restricted to
baseline and main, multiple-pass encoding, audio aac-lc, 32 kbps,
mono, 32 KHz, best encoding. Gave one copy the .m4v extension, the
other mp4.
All 7 of the above movies played fine both in iTunes and the iPod.
