Does anyone know where to get info on the main differences between
thee three profiles associated with h.264 part 10 (baseline, main
and extended)
The following two papers might be helpful in this respect:
http://iphome.hhi.de/marpe/download/commag06.pdf
http://iphome.hhi.de/marpe/download/h264_casm04.pdf
Looking to find out things like which of the profile types is the
most widely accepted on the various playback devices, which
produces the best images.
I'd guess that Baseline ist most widely accepted, although it's not
really a subset of Main. Main has some features that increase
quality for a given bitrate, but are either not supported
everywhere - B-Frames are not supported on the iPod, IIRC - or
computationally more expensive to decode like CABAC.
According to Wikipedia, H.264 in Quicktime is basically Baseline +
B-frames.
