Re: Sony HDR-UX1 to Mac connection?

Using AVCHD it's still difficult on Windows too.

As far as I know the only NLE that can directly open this format is the latest Thomson/GrassValley (formerly Canopus) Edius Pro. Thomson also makes a small converter from AVCHD to Canopus HQ codec named "AVCHD2HQ Converter". Canopus HQ is a DirectShow library, thus usable by every other apps unless it is blocked like Cineform and I don't think it is.

Another way to open (and convert) AVCD is to use the CyberLink PowerDVD Ultra filter maybe via Avisynth DirectShowSource()into VirtualdubMod for converting it in a cross platform codec. Virtualdub does't call DirectShow otherwise there's Microcosm by Digital Anarchy. Moreover Cineform is now available also for Mac.

Unfortunately the AVCHD filter bundled with the Nero suite fails in reproducing all the video frames: it actually intercuts the stream with a gray frame every while.

Bye - Gianni.

I've recently purchased a Sony HDR-UX1 and assumed I would be able to use it with my MacPro running 10.4.9. I am not having any luck whatsoever.
It appears that in HD mode, the camera stores the video onto the mini-dvd in AVCHD format which is apparently MPEG-4 AVC/H2.64.

If I hook the camera up to the Mac with the USB cable(no Firewire available), the camera shows up in the Finder, if I try to Finder copy the contents to the hard drive, I get a -50 error. If I try importing from iMovieHD, the file are greyed out and I cannot import anything. If I drag and drop onto iMovieHD, I get Quicktime errors.

If I set iMovieHD to camera mode, it says camera not attached up even tho the camera shows in the Finder. Clicking on the 'connection help' button finds it talking about Firewire but not usb connections.

So far nothing I've tried has worked at all.

Can anyone tell me what do I need to do in order to work with the HD videos from the HDR-UX1 on the Mac?

Thx for any insight,
Ken
