Playing SWF file within Keynote through Quicktime

Yet another follow up, with some (very) small progress regarding embedding Flash animations within Keynote:

It is possible to insert a Web View within a Keynote presentation.

Unfortunately, Keynote doesn't seem to like "file" URLs, so directly pointing the Keynote Webview to the Flash file doesn't work (it does in Safari).

Using an bare HTML file with only the Flash object is not enough: Keynote still doesn't like the "file" URL. Here is the HTML code to use in any case:

<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/ swflash.cab#version=7,0,0,0" width="800" height="400" id="SWFfile" align="middle">
<param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" />
<param name="movie" value="SWFfile.swf" />
<param name="quality" value="high" />
<param name="bgcolor" value="#ffffff" />
<embed src="pyridoxal.swf" quality="high" bgcolor="#ffffff" width="800" height="400" name="SWFfile" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"; />
</object>

However, it works when served from Personal Web Sharing. I only turned it on from the system preferences, and dropped it in my "Sites" folder as "Animation.html", together with the Flash file itself. The Webview URL in Keynote then becomes "http://localhost/ ~user/animation.html", and Keynote is quite happy with it.

This is far from perfect though: WebViews in Keynote are static. The animation doesn't run. You still need to click on it during the presentation. Then the default browser is launched and the animation runs, but not within Keynote.

Is it possible to improve the situation further? I guess yes, but not easily. It might be possible to develop a Keynote plug in that would play within Keynote. And maybe the overdue update to Keynote will improve in that respect.

Thank you again to all, you helped me get to the bottom of this issue.

- It turns out that Quicktime does work, but not on all SWF files. The files that don't play are probably a more recent version of the Flash format - Contrary to what I thought, it IS possible to open SWF files with the Adobe Flash Reader, despite it being only a browser plug-in. Simply open them from the Safari file menu. Dragging and dropping them on Safari's icon in the dock doesn't work though.

But now, I can't open any swf files with Quicktime at all.
