Re: 12 Canon 10D panoramas using Sigma 8mm Fisheye

I agree with Karl that workflow is a critical factor in producing VR's fast enough to be able to profit from them. If you spend a week or so developing an automated workflow then whether you take 7 or 70 photos it's irrelevant.

I have developed two applescript applications that both manage my VR projects and build them for me. They interface with the various apps either through the terminal or directly using Applescript. To build the cubics it is as simple as selecting the main folder (with sub folders for each node) entering the final movie parameters e.g. window size, compression codec, compression quality etc.

I then go to bed and when I wake up they are finished. So from my point of view only having to take 7 images is of no real benefit. It generally takes longer to choose the position, wait for the correct lighting etc then it does to take the actual photos. The other benefit is in the printing. I can render 30000px wide panos without any loss of quality. While fisheye lens do have their benefits, the loss of quality does not justify the minute time savings.

The reason you'll see stitching errors in this example is the nodal point for the vertical rotation hadn't been set for the tripod head. One other big factor is the algorithms that PTmac uses compared to those of stitcher. PTmac uses much more sophisticated algorithms in the stitching process then stitcher, the differences are very noticeable both on screen and in print.

Dear Giorgio,

I was in two minds like you too, but the Canon 10D is so much better in terms of work flow speed, so if you are making money it would pay for itself quickly.

Since Matthew was comparing his high resolution version against my low resolution web panoramas, I have produced a comparative example to the one Matthew is showing off.

I wouldn't want to get into an argument about which one is better, but mine is from just seven photos, I see less stitching errors in this example and less chromatic abberation by the lens. Some other differences could be down to the amount of sharpening done in post processing, I didn't bother and just let Stitcher use its default settings.

This comparison test is really important for me!

I need urgently to upgrade my camera (A Coolpix 995 very tired...) and I
was thinking about:

1) a "light-upgrade": Nikon Coolpix 5000 + Coolfix adaptor + Kaidan
Kiwi5000 cradle kit (+19mm wideangle for multirow stitching)
2) a "heavy-update": Digital Reflex (Canon D10) + Fisheye 8mm (Sigma)

Actually I have 2 panoramic heads: a Kaidan Kiwi990+Kiwi995 upgrade kit
and a Kaidan spherichal (for small digital cameras).
The choiche is not easy for me. I should need some tips from you. What's
the better choiche?

/cut

So, what do you suggest me?
[For information: last year I shot about 1000 panoramas (most with 2
fisheye circle images), a small part for business, the bigger free of
charge: small business, big number of shots]

A- sell 995 with lens and Kiwi995 and upgrade to reflex
B- just upgrade to 5000
C- Buy D10+Sigma and use 995 when lower quality required
D- Buy 5000 and wait for a full frame CCD camera (or customized digital
SLR fisheye lens)
E- other...

Cordially, thanks in advance
