If I understand your intent, I did many of these by trial and error, starting with cylinders, for examples:

Here is an example of spherical viewed with Java applet ptviewer. Look at the graphic to see how it looks as an equirectangle.

However, I haven't tried PtMac yet, which might make it a lot easier.
