Ermmm... Andrew and I have a history in disagreeing. :-) But I hope
you (and he) will believe me when I say that with a flat fee of less
than 20 Euro per month and agressive marketing for both DSL and cable
connections and a 95% cable infrastructure coverage, we (NL) are very
well on our way towards a critical mass of broadband users.

There's more to it than raw numbers, though. While broadband users account for about 35% of internet users as a whole, they represent an extremely attractive demographic for certain clients - a much more mainstream and affluent demographic when compared to dial-up users. Broadbanders are older, married, more experienced on the web and more willing to do transactions on the web (they spend money online!). They are about evenly split between men and women (as opposed to dial-up which is predominantly male) and they average a 30% higher income. They are also watching less and less television and reading fewer newspapers (the traditional venues to reach this target audience), making them harder to get at off-line. Broadbanders are a particularly attractive demographic to travel destinations, makers of luxury items and electronics, and media outlets. Soft goods manufacturers are also latching on to v-commerce solutions (Video and VR enabled e-commerce) at an expanding rate.

The broadband audience is on the verge of becoming a mainstream demographic with the same clout as mainstream television viewers. As VR content creators we are uniquely positioned to take advantage of this transition as we are able to offer compelling immersive experiences to content starved broadbanders. This is one of the areas of greatest projected growth in the next couple years and a definite opportunity zone for QuickTime content creators.
