It is not from the metadata of the original image but from the proportions of your cylindric panorama image.
If you make a cylindric which has the proportions 1-2 which is about 110 degrees for a cylinder, cubicconverter believes it is a spherical panorama.


If you drop cylindric movies on it it takes the data from the movie and it seems that RealViz stitcher is not always setting this data correct. Cubicconverter reads the FOV as 180 degrees which means that it believes it is already a cubic.
