Hello Bob,
Forget about the leveling bases with the thumb wheels. It will complicate
your setup time. Like the geared slides, it will slow you down. A good
medium size ballhead like the Bogen 488 with a bubble level is quicker to
setup.

In the rush to shoot the pano you don't even have to be very level at all
if you output to an Equirectangular(spherical) projection. The pano is then
an image map on the surface of a sphere. When stitching you can choose to
optimize any pitch and roll to level the pano with software like Panorama
Tools (PTMac or PTGui).

I have a couple of ballheads with indexed rotation:

The Kaiser one on the left is about 2" in diameter (light duty), the
Stroboframe on the right is 4.5" wide (heavy duty). Neither have a built-in
level. Could I basically, but an inexpensive bubble level ($7 at a hardware
store), place it on the top of the 2 ballheads, & get "leveling"? Does
anyone do this? It would be a lot cheaper, than buying the above Bogen 488
($95 @B&H). although, having a built-in level would be convenient.
I think the Kaiser would suffice, for a light-duty setup. The Stroboframe is
pretty dang heavy & big. I think the Bogen 488, would be a better solution.
I have a nice Cullman video fluid head, which has indexed rotation markings.
(has built-in level) I've been using it as the basis for a pano-head, but
it's kinda hacked. I use a Slik macro-focusing rack on top of the Cullman,
plus & L-bracket. It's way too bulky & heavy, but it seems to work. I need
a solution something like:

that's more streamlined & integrated.
