Matthew hasn't, AFAIK, published any errata nor done any updating to the source code for his (still, worth it) book.
I haven't tried using the sprite projection with cubics, though maybe someone else on this list has. It seems to me that the behavior (written by Matthew Peterson & modified by Michael Shaff) shouldn't act differently for different QTVR projections, since all of its parameters are based on pan angle, FOV and tilt angle inputs rather than projection type.
Possibly this is a QT, platform or caching issue -- what version of QT on which platform are you testing? Does it work in an earlier or later version? Mac and Win? Does it do this with sphericals?
A workable workaround -- but maybe a lot of work. :( I'd try some more testing to determine where the problem is before doing that (unless deadline looms ;).
