What if - Back to the beginning of the "panorama"

The term "pan-orama" was first mentioned in 1787 in the patent of the Irish painter Robert Barker, which described a round painted canvas of 360° where people could stand inside. Those we all know as there traditional panoramic paintings as the Panorama Mesdag in Den Hague. Those panoramas were very popular in the 19th century, but disappeared quickly when cinema came up.

What if you could transform this panoramic experience in the present and the digital world? This is exactly what we tried to do in an exhibition project, I've been working on for the last year on behalf of Swiss National Museums. We have a huge cylinder with a diameter of 8.5 meters and a digital 360 degrees projection system. People can stand in the centre of the cylinder and watch the panorama.

I'm very happy to present you a very exclusive preview of the installation, see http://concept360.ch/inc/alpenpanoramen.html . This panorama was shot during a test run of the projection system (you can see the seams of the projectors as red lines). The exhibition will feature besides this installation a historical timeline of the development of alpine panoramic photography in Switzerland. You can find the official exhibition website at http://www.musee-suisse.ch/d/schwyz/exhibition/alpenpano/ (in German and French).

More to come...

Best regards from Switzerland,

Matthias
