YEP, that's the bottleneck.

and there are specialized engines for this. A mature one is VIPS <http://www.vips.ecs.soton.ac.uk/> and a Google Summer of Code project we are having is about starting to bring the hugin process <http://hugin.sourceforge.net/> into VIPS.

another one, which is pretty impressive, is GEGL <http://www.gegl.org/> - I've assisted to an impressive presentation <http://people.xiph.org/~giles/2007/lgm/LGM_20070506-1-%C3%98yvind_Kol%C3%A5s.ogg> the whole presentation was a real-time editing of a huge document.
