Wasn't there some setup using a spherical mirror (just like those one-shot panorama systems)? I recall seeing a demo that worked by recording the video in the typical "donut"-shape (pre-2000), with playback being remapped in real time. Resulting image resolution would be abysmal, though... since you're enlarging a tiny part of what's most likely a 640x480 panorama source picture stored in a compressed format...
