I just got done perusing through the iPhone developer kit, and the
written documentation seems to indicate that QTVR isn't yet
supported. Actually, it seems that QuickTime in general isn't really
supported from what I can see so far. The SDK contains QuickTime
header files - including QuickTimeVR.h - but the documentation makes
no reference to it.
To be specific, the SDK's "Getting Started with Audio & Video"
document states:
"iPhone OS supports the ability to play video from files in either H.
264 (Baseline Profile Level 3.0) format or MPEG-4 Part 2 video (Simple
Profile) format directly from your application. Video playback is
supported in full-screen mode only and is primarily intended for game
developers who want to play cut-scene animations, although other
developers can use the feature as well."
!!!! HOWEVER !!!!!
As anyone who saw the SDK unveiling video online can attest, their is
a lot of opportunity for rich, high performance OpenGL applications.
The games demo'd were quite amazing - the 3rd party developers allowed
to play with the SDK for 2 weeks report that the graphics are "console
quality".
So I'm sure that VR players - maybe even fully "standard QTVR
compatible" - can be built. I'm still looking around to see if
iPhone Safari allows for any plug-ins so we can still easily deliver
VR via the web - I'll let you know what I find.
So actually, in this respect we VR guys are better off than anyone
wanting to do any solution involving video in a window. We have work
to do to get up and running, but the core 3D tools appear to be there
in spades.
That's the report so far,
-Tom
