I am, apparently, blind as a bat.
Hans, thanks! I had got to the point of scanning without proper care,
having gone through a number of pages already on the forum. Doh!
Launched CubicConnector, dropped the QTVR movie in as a single
node, went to Audio, dropped in the MP3 file, switched it to
directional, exported movie.
Did you remember to click the update button after changing to directional?
Yep. And while it plays, the audio is proper directional sound. All I
can say is that the behaviour is entirely consistent: the sound plays
to the end of the clip, then the audio stops and the QTVR goes white.
I've also updated to QT 7.4.1 and tried again. No luck.
I may try to dig out an old Mac OS 9 system folder and search out a
copy of Sound SaVR from somewhere. But this isn't encouraging.
I guess now is the time to start experimenting more with FPP. Pano2VR
doesn't yet do this sort of stuff - I wonder when this will be added?
But I must add that I'm still not really happy with the quality of
Flash-based panos... not for visually-critical uses.
