Re: State of Quicktime VR

We still use QTVR for some interactive kiosks that we build, but most of our investment and work is via the Java applet "PTviewer". This is really a fantastically small, and extraordinarilly capable Immersive VR tool.

I am amazed at the wide range of options and functionality, and the very (VERY) good panning speeds and image quality you see, especially on PCs (due to optimised Java engine there).

As for Flash, it is still very slow at panning, and it's range of functionality is more limited, but also more expandable for the future.

Apple thought that QTVR would take them places, but they failed to drive the technology, and just let it idle. Too bad.

At one time, we were working on a QTVR filter that would do a variety of stereoscopic presentation modes (not Red-Green anaglyph) for some very good display systems. But lack of support and interest from Apple pretty much killed that off. Again, too bad.

And Apple keeps breaking bits of QTVR, slowly but surely, and Macromedia/Adobe are STILL running the QT 3 (3!) Xtra in Director, sigh.

Oh, well. We're now starting to build our own system for mobile phones...

Cheers
William

I am writing about the sorry state of Quicktime VR, and its slow but
steady depreciation by Apple. They just seem to have lost interest.
This is all the more galling since Apple effectively invented
interactive photography and in the past have been its greatest
promoters, as shown by the very name of this list.
