I thank everyone for all their help with this issue for me. Unfortunately, I
still don9t have a solution. To recap, I haven9t been able to remotely
connect to my School9s server with ARD. I can locally, so we know the
problem is not with the software on the server or on my laptop. Everything
would point to the router. In our case it is a Netopia R9100. There are
zillions of them in operation and they are popular in Mac shops.
When I try to connect remotely I get a message that there is a problem
communicating with the computer. Yes, I am doing it over UDP port 3283. Many
people have tried various solutions, including making sure that it9s UDP and
not TCP. Further, people suggested that I do a scan of IPs close to and
including the target computer9s IP number....etc. None helped.
So, I bit the bullet and called Netopia and plunked out the money for
technical support. The lady who helped me telnetted into our router, saw the
setup and, long story short, said that I needed to contact the vendor as the
router is set up correctly. I was sure that I had not done something, but
she said that it seems to be set up just right.
She made a point that some apps have a hard time with NAT. A case in point,
she said is FileMakerPro. She said that the router has to be configured just
right or it balks with NAT. She said that with it the port you want is 5003
- but that you not only have to enable 5003 on TCP/IP but you have to block
it on the UDP side or it isn9t happy - or is it vice-versa? - I forget now
;)
Anyway, the Netopia lady said to contact Apple and see if there isn9t
something more to it than just enabling 3283 - it might need something else
to make it happy. She was able to scan our server9s open ports and see a
number of them responding (web, mail, Timbuktu, etc.) but there was no
response from 3283. We know the server will respond to 3283 because I can do
it locally, but it won9t take it somehow with NAT on the Netopia router.
So, I9ll call Apple next week and see if they9re aware of some hocus-pocus I
need to do. I9m off now for a long weekend of racing. I race cars in SCCA
and I9ll be at Sears Point, California the rest of this week. I will be
getting mail but will be unable to contact Apple with the app in front of me
properly.
Again thanks to all who have helped. I will summarize when I have a
solution.
