Ahh, okay. So yeah, `passwd` is the command you want.

If you want to tinker with Open Firmware, `nvram` looks like the one:

    # see if a boot password has been set
    $ sudo nvram -p | grep security-password

Similarly:

    # make verbose BSD style boots the default:
    $ sudo nvram boot-args=-v
