Here's the postflight script I run in a package sent to all our machines. This puts the serial # in Computer Info #1 data on all machines. Thanks to this list (I believe) from where the original script came from.
You should be able to use just a portion of the script to get the s/n.

BTW - so far reporting works great here.

set serial=`/usr/sbin/system_profiler SPHardwareDataType | awk '/Serial Number:/ { print $3 }'`
/usr/bin/touch /library/mps/serialNum.txt
/bin/echo $hostname > /library/mps/serialNum.txt
/bin/echo $serial >> /library/mps/serialNum.txt
/usr/bin/defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.remoteDesktop Text1 $serial
/bin/chmod 775 /Library/Preferences/com.apple.remoteDesktop.plist
'/System/Library/CoreServices/ARD Agent.app/Contents/Resources/kickstart' -restart -agent
