softwareupdate & proxy auth

Hi List..

I've been using the unix command softwareupdate -l to keep track of which machines need updating, but now we've introduced proxy authentication it's not working because there doesn't seem to be a way to pass a username/password to the command. I thought about saving the proxy information in System Preferences/Network/Proxies but as my users share machines and logins all over the place i really want to keep the authentication happening at the application level.

I've been googling this on and off for a while without success so if there's anyone that's come across this situation and worked out the solution i'd be most interested to hear it. (and yes i searched the list-archives too - http://lists.apple.com/archives/remote-desktop/2004/Oct/msg00145.html is much the same question without an answer :-)

regards,
..S.
